Ron's led his two sessions with Nicola acting as his ThinkingPartner in the morning, and Shawn his ThinkingPartner in the afternoon.

Please post:

1. The drafted prototype you developed for your ThinkingPartner, making sure to include the Needs Statement. Give some more thought to that prototype you shared with your ThinkingPartner...how could you refine it?

Then come tomorrow prepared to design and develop that prototype, in form of a plan (you'll develop the plan tomorrow in class).

2. Read through your Daily Formative Self-Assessment you have completed until now (4 in total) for the Summer Institute. Describe the kinds of things you have been writing about. What patterns do you notice in your thinking as evidenced in your postings?
Daily Formative Self Assessment Day 3: July 31tag:ourcolab.ning.com,2013-07-31:6510462:Topic:86632013-07-31T19:56:28.087ZRalph Cordovahttp://ourcolab.ning.com/profile/1es8p0ndiolui

Today was our 3rd day. We began the day with Shaw reading the EOD, followed by you working with your ThinkingPartner in the explore phase to identify a need you have, that you want to try out in the fall regarding math and SLA.

Ron's 1st session involved developing the need for multiplicative reasoning by distinguishing between additive and multiplicative, with multiplicative having the need for the equal distribution of units across a composite unit. This was illustrated with the green and yellow unifix cubes representing limes and lemons.

Ron's 2nd session involved engaging in Please Go Bring Me in order to illustrate how to help students develop multiplicative reasoning by:

1. Running to get the cubes, pushed learners to develop a composite number, and the repeated "Please Go Bring Me" forced the bringer to have a place holder in her mind that "six units" will always be the same height as the previous six. So, that composite numerocity was developed while fetching the cubes. And the fetching took place in a different part of the room.

2. Then the need for multiplicative reasoning took place when the "sender" asked the bringer to total the entire amount of towers.

Please do two things:

1. Share the needs statement that your ThinkingPartner developed for you. For example, Amanda Rossini created for me: "Ralph needs a way to bridge previous ways of using formative assessments he used when teaching 3rd grade, to the university level. He wants this his university students to become learning partners and to set learning goals."

2. Explore how you understand the difference (and how it is developed) between developing "composite numerocity" and "multiplicative reasoning"...and where your thinking is about what you need to focus on with your students.
Ethnographies of the Daytag:ourcolab.ning.com,2013-07-30:6510462:Topic:86392013-07-30T11:39:08.698ZRalph Cordovahttp://ourcolab.ning.com/profile/1es8p0ndiolui

Today was our first day of the QTEL Summer Institute.

As you reflect on the questions below, keep in mind the range of experiences we engaged in today.

We began with coffee and pastries, followed by an overview led by Ralph of the week's activities. The focus Ralph discussed what the Ron Tzur would lead 9 sessions, and each session would be framed as an Inquiry Into My Practice (IIMP).

His sessions/IIMPs would be 'book-ended' with Pre-Brief discussion with a ThinkingPartner, followed by his session/IIMP and then concluded with a DeBrief conversation with a ThinkingPartner.

Participants then took the MKT Survey. Ron then began his Session #1 at 10:45 with Ralph as Ron's ThinkingPartner. The session focused on observing two children and their mathematical reasoning.

After Ron's session, Ralph guided the 3x2 Debrief where participants listed 3 items they recall from Ron's IIMP, then listened in on as Ralph and Ron debriefed. This was followed by a final set of 3 more observations, and concluded with participants applying Ron's IIMP to their own practice, by exploring, envisioning and enacting the big ideas of Ron's IIMP to their own professional practice.

We had lunch, and after lunch Debra led a session on WIDA standards with Kim Song as her ThinkingPartner.

As you look back at your first day:

1. What do the activities we engaged in suggest about what is important in the math and ELL-focused work we do?

2. What aspect of your own practice in math, and with ELL's, do you wish to pursue when developing your own IIMP, which you will teach in the fall?

NOTE: Please respond to at least 2 colleagues' postings.
